A conference on preserving and developing traditional festivals, particularly the Giong Festival, in Vietnamese contemporary society opened in Hanoi on April 20.

The conference was jointly held by UNESCO Vietnam, the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

It featured 75 works by international and domestic researchers, showing both the positive and negative effects of traditional Vietnamese festivals in contemporary society.

They all agreed that to make overseas and domestic tourists fully understand the festivals, Vietnam needs to promote the legends and stories they are related to.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity for them to complete a Giong Festival profile to submit to USNECO for consideration and work out practical measures to preserve the Giong Festival.
