Bau Truc village in the southern province of Ninh Thuan is well known for ceramics of different patterns designed by skilled artisans. It is one of the two oldest ceramic villages in Southeast Asia.

The village has 480 ethnic Cham households, of which 260 practise making ceramics. From traditional products such as urns and water pots, villagers have developed fine art handicrafts for interior decoration and souvenirs for tourists.

Village chief Dang Phan said since the village shifted to making fine art handicrafts, many tourists and businesses have visited and placed orders. As a result, the craft has grown and flourished and craftsmen’s monthly income has also increased considerably to VND700,000-800,000.

Bau Truc ceramics are made of materials available in the village such as clay, sand and water. However, its ceramic making art is quite different from others. Instead of using the banding wheel to shape the products, Bau Truc craft men place their products on a chair or a table, go around it and make the shape. There are no standard moulds and craftsmen determine the shape based on their experience and inspiration.

Eighty-year-old Dang Thi Kiu, an experienced artisan in the village, said she is very happy because the traditional craft has thrived.
