A meeting to mark the 30th anniversary of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO was held in Hanoi on June 14 with the participation of former Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Khanh, former Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien and domestic and foreign scholars.

The Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO was established on June 15, 1977 with main tasks of researching and submitting Vietnam’s policies, programmes and action plans with UNESCO to the Prime Minister, as well as coordinating with UNESCO in implementing cultural, scientific, education and information activities.

Speaking at the meeting, Nguyen Quoc Uy, vice chairman of Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO said that during the past three decades the information sub-commission, together with the secretariat board and other sub-commissions have done the utmost to fulfill the commission’s tasks. The information sub-commission is an important channel to disseminate cultural, scientific and educational achievements and knowledge. Together with the Vietnam Journalists’ Association and State information agencies such as the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Television and Radio the Voice of Vietnam, the sub-commission successfully fulfilled its tasks.

In terms of education, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Phu Binh said the commission should determine ways to improve the educational system and its quality. It should actively coordinate with relevant agencies to prepare and submit documents to UNESCO for recognition of more Vietnamese cultural heritages. The commission should pay more attention to introducing Vietnamese cultural heritage to international friends as well as bringing world cultural values to Vietnamese people.
