Austrian Conductor Wolfgang Groehs and the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra of the Vietnam National Academy of Music will give concerts on October 17 and 18, 2011.

The concert will feature the Overture from the opera “L’ Italiana in Algeri” by Gioachino Rossini, the “Jupiter Symphony” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Rococo Variations for Cello and Orchestra by Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, with Austrian-Dutch Cellist Harriet Krijgh as soloist.

The conductor said he was very happy to be back to Hanoi.

“I first arrived in Hanoi a decade ago to conduct. Since then I have come to know the classical music scene of Vietnam very well and I have made many friends here,”  he said.

In his previous visits to Hanoi, Wolfgang Groehs conducted many memorable concerts. His greatest success, which left an imprint on the Vietnamese music scene, was the production of the opera “The Magic Flute” by Mozart at Hanoi Opera House.

For years, Groehs has dreamed about staging the first complete opera in Vietnam. He won the support of the Vietnamese and Austrian Ministries of Culture, and the cooperation of Austrian opera director Manfred Waba. The Magic Flute was performed in September 2006 by musicians of the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra and singers of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. It received thunderous applause from the sudience.

Wolfgang Groehs was born in Vienna in 1950 and finished studies in Music at the Vienna Music Academy as well as at the University of Vienna.

As a conductor, Groehs has performed inter alia at the Vienna Raimund Theatre, at the Opera of Graz and at the Salzburg Festival. In 1992, he founded the Europa Symphony Orchestra and worked as the chief conductor. He has toured many European countries as well as China and Japan, and recorded more than 30 CDs.

Free tickets for the concerts are available at the Austrian Embassy, 8th floor, 53 Quang Trung, Hanoi from October 10.
