Australia will provide 150 Australian development scholarships (ADS) to Vietnamese students in the 2009 academy year.

This is an initiative of the Australian Government with the aim of promoting sustainable development and building a modern education system in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 240 Vietnamese student received Australian scholarships worth VND260 billion in 2007.

The ADS will help Vietnam strengthen effective national management, promote economic development and human resources, and link people to people and organizations of the two countries.

The Government of Australia will work in partnership with the Government of Vietnam on a development co-operation program to advance Australia’s national interest by assisting Vietnam to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. ADS is a very important and well recognized element in Australia’s bilateral development cooperation with Vietnam, accounting for approximately 20 percent of the current annual program budget. Since 1992, more than 2,000 Vietnamese students have studied in Australia.
