An Australia Month was launched in Hanoi on January 11 in the hope of offering people across Vietnam a better chance to understand the land and culture of the world's biggest island nation.

The event was organised by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi with coordination from relevant Vietnamese agencies marking the lead-up to Australia's National Day which falls on January 26.

The most noteworthy activity will be a film festival, called the Australian Embassy Film Roadshow 2007, introducing six of Australia's most famous feature-length movies and short films.

The festival is scheduled to start in Ho Chi Minh City on January 20 and last through January 24. All films will be screened at the Diamond Plaza Cinema.

The festival will then move to Hanoi, where showings begin at the National Cinema Centre on Australia's National Day. It will run until Feb. 1, with two films showing every night except January 29.

Education-related events will include pre-departure seminars for Vietnamese students heading overseas and the Australian Endeavour Scholarship Awards which will be presented on January 19.

The Australian Education International (AEI) in conjunction with Hoa Hoc Tro magazine will organise the Eureka - Challenge You Mind Contest, a science competition for high school students.

The aim is to encourage students to create toys and games based on scientific principles.
