The 2012 Asian Billiards Championships opened in Ho Chi Minh City on July 4.

30 players from six Asian countries: Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and the host, Vietnam, will compete in the one-and three-cushion carom events.

The aim is to choose the best players for the World Championships to be held in Porto, Portugal in September.

Present at the opening ceremony was legendary Turkish player Semih Sayginer, who won the world championship title in 1992 and 1998 and was voted World Player of the Year in 2003.

The championships will last through to July 8.
