A resident in Trieu An commune, Trieu Phong district, central Quang Tri province, handed over a jar of ancient coins to the provincial museum on November 7.

This person had found the jar 1m underground while seeking war remnants.

The jar with a broken mouth contains copper coins weighing 34kg in total. Each coin has a square hole and Chinese characters on its surface.

Le Duc Tho, vice director of Quang Tri Museum, said that the money includes Chinese coins cast during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and Vietnamese coins dating back to the 15th century.

The jar is the oldest of its kind discovered so far in the locality.
