More than 8,000 young singers around the country are expected to turn out for auditions for the new Vietnam Idol, a spinoff of American Idol, one of the world's most popular TV shows.

American Idol, which airs in more than 107 countries, has become a TV phenomenon, consistently ranking as the most-watched show on US television. Spinoffs of the show have been launched in 39 countries.

The Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV) and its partner the Dat Viet Advertising Agency recently inked a copyright deal with American Idol's producer FremantleMedia to create Vietnam Idol.

Sponsored by Unilever Vietnam, the four-month event will air on seven TV stations in the country's major cities and provinces.

After the first round of selections on May in HCM City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Can Tho, 10 contestants will enter the final round in July.

Like the American show, the winner will be selected by viewers who will send their votes via the internet, SMS or phone. Vietnam Idol's panel of judges will include three people - pop star Siu Black and musicians Tuan Khanh and Ha Dung.

Candidates must be between 16 to 30 years of age. They can submit an application to the organising board at the Dat Viet Advertising Agency, 200 Pasteur Street, District 3, HCM City.
