The death toll of the cholera outbreak in Haiti has risen to 1,817, the Haitian Public Health Ministry said on December 2.

A total of 36,207 patients have been hospitalized in the country due to this deadly epidemic, which has affected more than 80,000 people, mostly in the Artibonite region in the north of the country, the ministry said.

The Artibonite region registered the most cases, with a total of 40,000 cases and 700 deaths, the ministry added.

The unstable sanitary conditions in the country, due to a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, have aggravated the epidemic situation.

The Haitian authorities have launched a media campaign encouraging people to take preventive measures such as washing hands and drinking clean water.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Dominican Republic, there have been 12 cases of cholera.
