The first-time visit by a Chinese naval warship is part of a military exchange programme between the two countries.
With 345 officers and soldiers onboard, "Shenzhen" entered Tokyo Bay in the early morning and was led to port by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF)'s frigate "Thunder".
During the visit, crew members will take part in friendship exchanges with local people while senior officers will visit Japan’s Defense Ministry and a military base.
The visit is a significant and memorable event that opens a new page in the history of Japan-China defense exchange and military communications, Japanese MSDF Chief of Staff Eiji Yoshikawa said.
Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cui Tiankai said the visit is set to inspire new vigor and momentum into the development of bilateral ties.
