Chinese Tan Xue claimed the Sabre championship after beating American Rebecca Ward 15-12 in the final of the Women’s Sabre Grand Prix and World Cup at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace on May 26.

Earlier, the Chinese fencer knocked out American Zagunis Mariel, to come first in the world rankings, at a score of 5-11 in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese fencer Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan advanced towards an improved world ranking after a strong performance in the qualifying round.

Loan, aged 17 and placed 365th in world, was qualified to complete with three wins and three losses in the group round. In the knock-out match, however, she lost 15-7 to German Koening Susane.

Vietnamese fencer Trinh Thi Ly, the Southeast Asian bronze medallist, was also qualified for the knock-out competition but Southeast Asian Games gold medallist Nguyen Le Dung and Nguyen Thi Thuy Chung were stopped at the group competition round.

With 106 players from 23 countries and territories competing in individual and team events, the tournament provided a good chance for Vietnamese fencers to gear up for the Beijing Olympic Games Asian Zone qualifier next April.
