Cambodia has asked Thailand to postpone indefinitely the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for August 27-28 in Bangkok.

Thai defence spokesman Col Thanathip Sawangsaeng said on August 11 that as scheduled, the meeting will be jointly chaired by the Defence Ministers of the two countries.

According to the spokesperson, Cambodia's decision to postpone the GBC meeting might be a result of the border tension over the Hindu Preah Vihear temple.

Earlier, on July 29, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee (WHC) decided to reschedule its discussion on Cambodia's management plan for the Preah Vihear temple to its 35th annual meeting in Bahrain in 2011.

Prior to the WHC decision to postpone its discussion, Thailand threatened to walk out of the WHC meeting if the panel considered the Cambodian plan since the Thai side had not yet looked into details of the plan.

Thailand and Cambodia have historically laid claim to the site, which is located on a mountain top on the Thai-Cambodia border. The disputed area of 4.6 square kilometres has not been demarcated.

The International Court of Justice’s judgment in 1962 said the temple, which was built in the 11th century, was situated in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia.
