ASEAN welcomes Myanmar’s decision to hold the General Election on November 7, 2010, according to a statement issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam – ASEAN Chair – in Hanoi on August 17.

The statement says ASEAN encourages Myanmar to further accelerate progress in the implementation of its roadmap for national reconciliation and democracy, including preparations for the election toward a constitutional government in the country.

ASEAN underscores the importance of national reconciliation in Myanmar and the holding of the general election in a free, fair and inclusive manner, thus contributing to national stability and development.

The statement says Myanmar should continue to work closely with ASEAN and the United Nations to speed up this process. For its part, ASEAN is ready to offer assistance to Myanmar if required and in accordance with the ASEAN Charter. ASEAN will keep close consultations with Myanmar in this regard.
