Ten ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations) foreign ministers and representatives from the Philippines and Vietnam discussed issues of Myanmar and Korean Peninsula on January 16.

They, together with ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan, was scheduled to discuss the ASEAN community in a global context. It will be officially closed on January 17.

During the tea break of the close-door meeting, Surin Pitsuwan told Xinhua that the attendees mainly discussed two issues, which are the Myanmar issue and the Korean Peninsula issue.

He said that the foreign ministers were pleased with the political situation in Myanmar, and hoped the new government would engage more effectively and constructively in ASEAN mechanisms and achieve a true integration inside the country.

"We have been promised that Myanmar will seize to be an issue for ASEAN in our engagement with the global international community," said Surin.
