The 14th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting opened in Hanoi on the afternoon of November 18 with the participation of the heads of the 21 APEC member economies. State President Nguyen Minh Triet, who chaired the two-day meeting, welcomed the participating leaders at the Grand Hall of the National Convention Centre.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard was the first APEC leaders to enter the convention centre. Australia is one of the largest economy in the South Pacific and one of the 12 founders of the grouping.

Then came Chinese President Hu Jintao, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Filipino President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Canadian PM Stephen Harper, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, the Republic of Korean President Roh Moh-huyn, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Malaysian PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong, Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont. US President George W. Bush was the last APEC leader to be greeted by State President Triet.

After that, APEC leaders began the first closed session.

Among top issues on the agenda, APEC leaders will discuss measures to resuscitate the Doha Round of trade negotiations and consider the Hanoi Action Plan to implement the Busan Roadmap and achieve the Bogor Goals, as well as documents adopted at the 18th APEC Ministerial Meeting and the fourth APEC Business Advisory Council and a statement on the resumption of the stalled Doha Round.
