Torrential rain in southern China triggered floods and landslides, killing an unknown number of people and forcing more than 55,000 to leave their homes, Xinhua news agency reported on June 14.

Days of downpours across central and southern China have already killed nearly 100 people, the Chinese government said on June 13.

"A new round of heavy rain has started to batter several southern regions, causing more deaths and triggering floods and landslides which had forced over 55,000 people to evacuate their homes as of late Tuesday," said Xinhua.

"The rain is forecast to last till Friday in some regions, according to local meteorological authorities," the agency added.
