Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Cao Duc Phat has set a target of earning US$6 billion from exports of agro-forestry products in 2006, US$200 million more than in 2005.

To achieve the target, the minister has instructed localities to allocate 2 million ha of forests to farmers for protection and 1.2 million ha for re-afforestation.

In 2005, the country shipped abroad over US$5.8 billion worth of agro-forestry products. Staples posting the highest export turnovers were wooden furniture valued at US$1,517 million and rice, US$1,390 million. However, several products, including pepper, tea and cooking oil, suffered decreases in export value due to decreased prices in the world market.

Vietnam’s coffee, rice, and wooden furniture have secured their footholds in the world, being present in 100 countries and territories, with Asian and European nations and the US being its largest importers.
