SJC gold at the Gold, Silver and Gemstone Company in Ho Chi Minh City increased to VND18.29 million per tael on May 21, up VND390,000 per tael compared with transactions on May 20.

At 10am on May 21 SJC gold was traded at VND18.18-18.30 million per tael in Hanoi, rising by VND380,000 per tael compared with morning prices for May 20 and VND300,000 per tael against closing prices that same day.

SJC gold in other big markets, including Da Nang, Can Tho and Nha Trang, was also sold at VND18.29-18.30 million per tael.

Domestic prices have risen due to the surging price of gold on the world market, as well as the recent decision by the Ministry of Finance to increase the tax on gold imports from 0.5 percent to 1 percent and limit its quotas. These measures have had a psychological impact on gold consumers, stimulating the price rise.

According to Truong Cong Nhon, deputy managing director of SJC Sai Gon Gold, Silver and Gemstone Company, the domestic price of gold is lower than the world rate by VND250,000 per tael.
