The rainy season in 2009 is expected to develop in a complicated fashion, with heavy rain covering large areas of the country for an unprecedented period of time, according to the Director of the national Hydrography and Meteorology Centre, Bui Minh Tang.

The rainfall nationwide this year will be much higher than the average level recorded in previous years, hitting the Northern region in particular in the middle of the season.

Compared to the historical floods in Hanoi and many provinces in the Red River Delta and central region in 2008, the rainfall this year could possibly be even higher, said Mr. Tang.

To deal with the rain this year, authorities in the northern region have drawn up plans to cope with the deluge and will move people away from dangerous areas and provide emergency relief to people in remote and inaccessible areas.
