Two of Israel's main political parties are calling for early elections to be held in February. The leaders of the Kadima and Likud factions in Israel's parliament expressed support for a February 10 date as they met on Tuesday with other lawmakers to set an election timetable.

Israeli President Shimon Peres launched the election process Monday after the head of Israel's ruling Kadima party, Tzipi Livni, failed to form a new coalition government.

Foreign Minister Livni was elected Kadima leader last month in place of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who resigned to fight corruption allegations.

Ms
Livni abandoned coalition talks last week after rejecting conditions set by other parties and must now win early elections to become prime minister. Polls show Ms Livni and opposition Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu are the two front-runners for the post.

Mr Olmert remains a caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.
