A Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will attend a top debate of the 15th conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 5th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference is of great significance and gives the participating countries the chance to come up with new International agreements to deal with climate change on a global scale after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2010.

The conference will discuss a number of issues related to amendments and supplements to the Kyoto Protocol, mechanisms for capacity building and the transfer of technology and financial support for the Kyoto Protocol.

PM Dung will deliver a speech at the conference and Vietnam will hold a seminar on its efforts to cope with climate change and put forward various amendments and supplements to the Kyoto Protocol, commitments on reducing gas emissions after 2010 and the transfer of technologies to enhance the capability of countries to adapt to and mitigate climate change along with other financial issues.

Vietnam has taken part in measures to cope with climate change, therefore, many countries want it to help bring developed and developing countries together to deal with the issue.

At the conference, Vietnam will put forward five issues and call all countries to make concerted effort in the fight against climate change.

Developed countries need to provide financial support and new technologies for those countries heavily affected by climate change. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol must continue to serve as a legal agreement for the international community to be able to cope with climate change.
