The annual tree-planting festival was launched in many provinces and cities across the country on February 8.

All eight districts of the northern province of Ninh Binh took part in the festival, which attracted a large number of local authorities, workers and students. In the morning of February alone, nearly 4,400 people in Ninh Binh planted 1,500 trees in public places such as streets, healthcare centres, kindergartens and children’s palaces.

The festival is part of the activities to protect the environment and mitigate impacts of climate change.

In the central province of Ha Tinh, various types of trees were planted on the occasion as part of a project on forest development in the 2010-2020 period. Under the project, Ha Tinh will grow four million trees in all districts and towns annually.

Central Nghe An province also launched the tree-planting festival to commemorate the late President Ho Chi Minh, who initiated the idea of the festival. The province aims to plant more than one million trees and develop 500 hectares of forest in 2011.

The festival was also organised in the northern province of Yen Bai in response to President Ho’s teaching about the benefits of planting trees. In 2010, the province planted 41,000 trees and developed more than 275.4 hectares of forest.

Many businesses and local residents worked together to plant trees, protect forest and prevent forest fire.
