The 28th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-28) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has cemented the body's role as an integral component of Southeast Asia's political life.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the AIPA-28, made the remark at an interview after attending the annual event.

Chairman Trong said that the AIPA-28 affirmed the need to raise the quality of AIPA activities to make it an organisation of increased consensus and also praised it for continuing to reflect the organisation's platform of friendship, unity and cooperation to further promote mutual development.

Regarding Vietnam 's proposals that were approved by the AIPA-28, Chairman Trong said that the Vietnamese delegation proposed two draft resolutions, one on enhancing the AIPA's role in and contribution to the drafting of the ASEAN Charter; and the other on promoting cooperation between the AIPA and ASEAN.

On the sidelines of the AIPA-28, Mr Trong had separate meetings with the Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives, the AIPA-28 Chairman, and the President of the Malaysian national petroleum group Petronas, who praised Vietnam 's rapid development and national unity.
