Vietnam has called on the United States to put an immediate end to its economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.
Hoang Chi Trung, Vietnamese Charge d’affaires to the United Nations, made the demand at the plenary meeting of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York on October 30.

“Vietnam holds that this longest-ever embargo in history runs counter to the fundamental principles of international law, the UN Charter and the regulations of the World Trade Organisation (WTO),” Mr Trung said.

He stressed that the prolongation of such coercive economic measures will only cause further tension in bilateral relations between the US and Cuba, and more difficulties to the Cuban people, especially women and children.

Every nation has the inalienable right to determine its own political system and path of development suitable to its specific conditions, Mr Trung said, adding that Vietnam is convinced that the differences between the US and Cuba should be settled through dialogue and negotiations on the basis of mutual respect and respect for each other’s independence and sovereignty and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“We believe that the normalisation and development of friendly relations between the two geographically close neighbours will only serve the interests of their people and those of regional and international peace and security,” the diplomat said.

The UN General Assembly on October 30 voted overwhelmingly for the 16th year in a row to demand an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.
