Vietnamese border guards and fishermen on September 6 rescued 58 foreigners aboard a ship drifting in the Vietnamese waters. Among the foreigners, 37 were Myanmar citizens, 18 Cambodians, two Laotians and a Thai.

The fishermen said that on September 3 they saw a small ship with a lot of people on aboard while fishing at latitude 7o North and longitude 107o East in the Vietnamese waters. They sent out signals, but received no reply. They steered their two fishing boats towards the ship and found that it was a small and very old ship without any navigation equipment, food or drinking water on it. All the people aboard the unknown ship looked very worn out.

The fishermen coordinated with border guards of southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province to successfully tow the drifting ship to Military Zone No7 Port of Vung Tau City on September 6.

All the foreigners were provided with the daily necessities at the provincial borderguard station’s guesthouse. The station is working with the provincial department of foreign affairs and the police to prepare to hand over the rescued personnel.
