From March 6 to April 28, as many as 1,123 people in Hanoi were infected with severe acute diarrhea with 44 cases testing positive for Vibrio Cholerae, according to the Hanoi Department of Health.

Over the past five days, the number of acute diarrhea patients admitted to hospital has dropped to about 5-10 cases/day.

Prof. Dr. Le Anh Tuan, head of the department said on April 28 that the Hanoi Preventive Medicine Department had received the results of water samples taken from 55 ponds and lakes in the city. All these samples proved negative for Vibrio Cholerae.

Hanoi has temporarily kept the epidemic under control with a decreasing number of acute diarrhea patients admitted to hospital. However, Mr Tuan warned that the epidemic might recur unless effective measures were taken to ensure environmental sanitation and food safety.
