Music Professor Nguyen Thuyet Phong, a Vietnamese national in the US, introduced the Vietnamese Dan Nguyet (Moon-shaped lute) while addressing a music seminar in Bangkok and the Thai ancient capital of Ayuthaya in late July.

Mr Phong, who lectures at both Kent State University in the US and the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatoire, answered more than 20 questions relating to Vietnamese music.

The professor has worked in the past 30 years to promote Vietnamese music, especially folk and traditional music, in the world.

Participants focused on the teaching of music in universities, emphasizing the interaction between western and eastern forms of music.

They also noted that Vietnam’s contemporary music has strongly incorporated the world’s pop and rock music into its diverse values, while music from Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam has also found its way into European and US university curricula.
