Vietnam’s rice exports in the first quarter of this year totalled 1.75 million tonnes, earning US$786 million, a year-on-year increase of 71.3 percent in volume and 76.2 percent in value.
In March alone, Vietnam shipped 700,000 tonnes abroad worth US$315 million.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), food prices rose slightly in this month, with 5% and 25% broken rice traded at US$435-460 and US$400-410 a tonne respectively on foreign markets.
However, the VFA now has a policy of slowing down rice exports, which are expected to hit 4.5-5 million tonnes this year. Rice businesses have signed contracts to ship 3.6 million tonnes abroad in the first six months of this year.
