The National Assembly's plenary session was chaired by President Samdech Heng Samrin, with the participation of 65 legislators of the ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) and 39 others from the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).
Kem Sokha was removed from his former position as the First Vice President of the National Assembly of Cambodia in late October 2015.
Last week, he received a royal pardon from King Norodom Sihamoni per the request of the Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.
Later, President Samdech Heng Samrin signed a document to accept the CNRP’s request, which appointed Kem Sokha as the parliament's minority leader instead of Sam Rainsy, the leader of the CNRP who currently lives abroad in exile.
At the session, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that Kem Sokha is his dialogue partner to discuss national issues, along with the parliament’s majority leader Sar Kheng, the Deputy Minister and Minister of Interior of Cambodia.
The Parliament of Cambodia consists 123 seats, of which the CPP holds 68 while the CNPR holds 55 seats.
