Vietnam’s entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has also been attributed to the support received from the international community. The country will play an active role in contributing to the development of the WTO community, says Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General, Pascal Lamy, at the Government Office in Hanoi on November 15.

Mr Dung thanked the WTO leader for supporting for Vietnam’s WTO accession.

Vietnam
’s entry into the  World Trade Organisation (WTO) has also been attributed to the support received from the international community. The country will play an active role in contributing to the development of the WTO community. As host country of the APEC Summit, Vietnam is actively calling on APEC leaders to resume the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) with a view to promoting global trade liberalisation, Mr Dung noted.

For his part,  Mr Lamy expressed his delight at the efforts made by Vietnam during the negotiation process to become the 150th member of the global trade body.

He described Vietnam as a rising star in the region and voiced his support for the country in its post WTO period, adding that donors will be priotising areas that are in need in Vietnam.

The same day, the WTO General Director had a working lunch with members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) in Hanoi. Addressing the working session,
Mr Lamy expressed hope that APEC will help promote the DDA and resolve the deadlock in the agricultural liberalisation negotiation process. He emphasised three points that he has high hopes for the ABAC. Firstly, to encourage governments to finalise the DAA. Secondly to help the WTO make clear the benefits of the Doha round to those who are not aware of them. Opinions from the business community play an important role in promoting  understanding and support for global trade. Thirdly to take part in the world trade liberalisation negotiation process as much as possible.

Mr Lamy also answered questions raised by entrepreneurs about the development of the Doha round.

Earlier, the WTO leader delivered a speech at the on-going APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), calling APEC member economies to show more determination to promote global trade liberalisation.
