The Technology Centre for Bomb and Mine Disposal of Vietnam's Ministry of Defence (BOMICEN) and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) signed an agreement on November 10, which calls for the implementation of Phase II of the "Vietnam UXO/Landmine Impact Assessment and Survey."

According to the US embassy in Hanoi, the US$1.1-million project, funded by the US Department of State, will map out and evaluate the impact of, and selectively remove unexploded ordnance and landmines that remain in certain areas and cause injuries to Vietnamese civilians.

The project, scheduled to finish on August 31, 2007, will complete the work in the remaining communes of these three provinces and extend into Nghe An and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.

During Phase I of the project, BOMICEN and VVAF carried out surveys in 344 of 549 communes in the three provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri, cleared more than 421 hectares of land, located and destroyed 6,250 items of UXO and landmines.
