In December, the food and food-related services increased by 3.27 percent, and the group of housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials by 2.86 percent.
The prices of post and telecommunications services remained unchanged, but commodities like transport, footwear, headwear, drinks and cigarettes, home equipment and appliances increased slightly, by 1 percent.
Economists attributed the CPI rise this year mainly to the surging prices of input materials and a high USD/VND exchange rate and also mentioned the growing consumer demand during the closing months prior to the traditional lunar new year festival.
The price of gold in December soared 5.4 percent over November and 37.02 percent year on year while the value of the US dollar rose 3.44 percent over November and 7.44 percent from 2009.
