ASEAN plays central role in regional issues: Malaysia minister

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) plays a central role in dealing with regional issues, according to Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

He made the remark at a press conference at the Parliament of Malaysia on May 19.
The minister also revealed that the East Sea issue will be raised at an informal meeting between Malaysia and China at the 10th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting to be held in Laos from May 24-27.

He said the centrality of the ASEAN must be prioritised because the ASEAN, a group of ten member nations, will fare better facing these powers together than nations facing them individually.

He reiterated that ASEAN member nations must make efforts to ensure that the ASEAN will be central in superpowers’ geopolitical consideration.
