In the qualifying round of the tournament, the Vietnamese girls showed their ability and talent by recording three consecutive wins, including a 2-0 victory over the Philippines, a 16-0 thrashing of minnows Timor Leste, and a narrow 2-1 win over Myanmar.
Despite enjoying a strong start to the competition, the women’s team were defeated by host nation Thailand 1-0 in the semi-finals.
The Thai team eventually went onto become champions after beating Laos 5-3 in the final.
The bronze medal marks another significant achievement in 2019 for women’s football in Vietnam. In March, the U16 team qualified for the final round of the AFC U-16 Women's Championship.
In April the women’s national football team made it to the third round of the 2020 Olympic qualifiers, whilst the U19s secured a spot in the final round of the 2019 Asian U19 Football Championship.
