|Vietnam move up to 93rd in latest FIFA rankings
The latest rankings place Vietnam 20 places higher than Thailand, their next opponents in the World Cup 2022 qualification campaign.
This rise can be attributed to the impressive performance put on in their most recent competitive fixture during which they beat the UAE 1-0.
At the start of World Cup qualification, the UAE had been the number one seeds in Group G due to their position at 67th in the FIFA rankings, 30 places higher than Vietnam. Following the victory over the UAE, the national team added 15.1 points to their total, helping them climb the rankings.
This victory is coupled with the loss of Cyprus in their recent fixture against Scotland in the Euro 2020 qualifying round. As a result, the European team have dropped two places to 95th.
Vietnam will be presented with another chance to improve their FIFA ranking in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Thailand on November 19. If the national team are able to win, they will secure first place in Group G, in additional to moving closer to the world’s top 90 by adding a further 10.5 points to their total.
The all-time highest ranking that the Vietnamese men's football team has ever achieved is 84th place, which they claimed way back in September 1998.
