|Vietnam has the chance to host the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 if the novel coronavirus pandemic is not contained in Southeast Asia
The AFF is examining the possibility of organizing such event in Vietnam, following the complex development of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the region.
Vietnam has been singled out for effective control of the disease. The country has gone almost two months in a row without new community infections, and nearly 97% of the positive cases have fully recovered from the virus with no deaths.
Tuan said the VFF has received strong support from the government, relevant ministries and agencies to organize the event.
At the meeting, Tuan proposed applying a new FIFA rule that allows teams to make up to five substitutions per match, instead of three as at present, to protect the players’ health in the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak and limit injuries.
He also proposed expanding the preliminary registration list of each participating team from 50 to 70 people, the official registration list to 30 players from the current 23, and the official line-up to 23 instead of 20.
The AFF Competition Board approved his proposals.
The drawing ceremony of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 is scheduled to be held in August, and matches are due to take place between November 23 and December 31 following the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
