Thailand’s U23 side put in a strong performance in their final group game, recording a 1-1 draw with Iraq and making it into the quarter-finals as the second-place team of Group A. Their progress marks the first time in history that Thailand have made it to the final eight of the AFC U23 Championship finals.
Elsewhere in Group A Australia’s U23s top the group after earning five points from their three fixtures. They put in a competent display against Thailand to emerge 2-1 winners in addition to recording a goalless draw against Iraq before playing out a 1-1 draw with Bahrain.
Joining the two teams in the AFC U23 Championship quarter-finals are the U23 team from the Republic of Korea (RoK) who qualified after only two games having beat both China and Iran.
The RoK’s U23 squad will take on current champion Uzbekistan in their third group match. With the RoK two points above Uzbekistan’s U23s, they only need a draw in order to win Group C.
The third matches of Group B and Group D will be held on January 15 and January 16, with Vietnam’s U23 side needing a win against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to progress out of the group stages.
