Saudi Arabia’s U23s top Group B after inflicting a 1-0 defeat on Syria’s U23s on January 15. With the result, both teams make it to the quarter-finals of the competition, whilst both Qatar and Japan were knocked out after playing each other to a 1-1 draw.
In Group C, current champions Uzbekistan progress despite suffering a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Republic of Korea (RoK)’s U23s. The RoK lead Group C after winning all three of their group games, with Uzbekistan’s U23s in second.
At present six teams have made it into the quarter-finals of the AFC U23 Championship, including Australia and the host nation Thailand from Group A, Saudi Arabia and Syria from Group B, and the RoK and Uzbekistan from Group C.
In the final round of matches in Group D on January 16, Jordan are due to face the United Arab Emirates, whilst Vietnam will play the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The two matches will decide the remaining two teams who qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament.
