Facing Quang Liem in the third round of the FIDE World Cup was 21-year-old defending European champion Vladislav Artemiev, Elo rating 2757. Despite his youth, the Russian is a strong opponent having previously won a number of tournaments, including the Gibraltar International Chess Festival, the World Team Championship, and the European Individual Championship.
Going into the tie as the underdog, Liem showed his confidence and put on a valiant display, finally holding Vladislav Artemiev to a draw after 39 moves.
The two prodigies are now set to face off again in an away match, which is scheduled to take place tonight. In the match up, Vladislav Artemiev will enjoy the advantage of holding the white pawn.
If Liem is able to qualify for the fourth round of the competition, he will receive a cash prize of US$25,000.
