The native of Thanh Hoa province successfully beat his rival from Singapore in the men’s 65 kg category to achieve a goal medal for the Vietnamese team.
Ngoc Toan is looking to build on a strong 2018, having won a silver medal at the Asian Games 2018 in Indonesia and a gold medal at 8th National Sports Festival 2018.
Earlier in the tournament, Vietnamese duo Hua Van Huy and Chau Tuyet Van also won a silver medal in the taekwondo freestyle poomsae mixed pair event.
In adidtion, Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim, and Nguyen Thi Mong Quynh overcame athletes from the host country to take home gold medals in the women’s team event.
In this year’s tournament, 2,414 martial artists from across the world are competing for 271 medals across 20 separate martial arts categories. Some of the segments include belt wrestling, judo, taekwondo, aikido, ju-jitsu, Muay Thai, sambo, savate, wushu, kabaddi, kurash, pencak silat, and hapkido.
Local athletes are competing in several different categories, including taekwondo, judo, and traditional Vietnamese martial arts.
The Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships, is running with the theme of “Beyond the Times, Bridge the World”, and is set to last until September 7.
