Among the 16 competing chess players, Liem, Elo rating in rapid chess of 2706, was seeded number 10. He earned seven points from 11 matches, including three wins and eight draws and earned a rating performance of 2810. Following the tournament, he increased his Elo rating in rapid chess to 2736, leaving the super grandmaster 25th in the world.
The Vietnamese player was awarded prize money of US$12,600 whilst Anton Korobov, the winner of rapid event, received nearly US$20,200 in prize money.
The 16 players will continue to compete in the Blitz chess event, which is set to take place between May 17 and May 18.
The Vietnamese super grandmaster is seeded number nine with an Elo rating in blitz chess of 2699.
In this year’s tournament, the World Masters Championship drew more than 200 athletes from 49 countries.
They will compete across five sporting events, including chess, xiangqi, go, draughts, and bridge with 17 disciplines in total.
Liem is the only Vietnamese chess player who has been invited to compete at the championships.
