Vietnam Airlines brings home more Vietnamese stranded in US

VOV.VN - A Boeing Dreamliner of Vietnam Airlines left Dulles International Airport in Washington DC on May 15, bringing home 345 Vietnamese citizens stranded in the coronavirus hit US.

The Boeing Dreamliner is to carry another 345 Vietnamese citizens stranded in the US back to Vietnam 
Most of the passengers boarding the plane were children, the elderly and sick people with underlying illnesses, and students who became homeless due to the closure of dormitories.

Nguyen Hong Hai, a university student in Pennsylvania, said he could not afford the high living costs in the US during the summer after the school where he was studying was forced to close for several months.

“I am very lucky to be among the passengers, because many people registering with the Vietnamese Embassy were not selected.” Hai said before boarding the plane.

“I will feel very secure when I return to Vietnam, since Vietnam has done a very good job, with a low rate of infection and no deaths reported so far.”

They have longed to meet their relatives soon in Hanoi
Similarly, Tran The Anh, another Vietnamese student at Johns Hopkins University, said he had no choice but to register to return to Vietnam as the school requests students to leave the dormitory after each semester.

“I registered and had no problems at all,” Anh said.

According to Le Dung, Vietnam Airlines chief representative to the US, this was the second flight to repatriate Vietnamese citizens from the US following the first departing from San Francisco 10 days ago.

He revealed that Vietnam Airlines is working with Vietnamese representative agencies in the US to prepare for similar flights in the time to come.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Ha Kim Ngoc expressed his regret that the diplomatic agencies could not arrange the flight for a number of Vietnamese citizens who have already applied for registration.

He asked for their sympathy and pledged to report to relevant Vietnamese agencies back in the country to meet the citizens’ increasing demand.

“As far as we know several international airlines are also seeking to re-run commercial flights to Vietnam. We will keep the stranded citizens abreast of these flights as soon as we get the information,” the diplomat said.

The Boeing Dreamliner carrying 345 Vietnamese citizens is scheduled to land at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport on May 16 evening.
