The National Centre of Hydro-meteorology and Forecasting (NCHMF) reported at 4am August 11 Mekkhala was heading toward Fujian at a speed of 90kph near its centre.
In the next 6-12 hours the storm is forecast to make landfall on the southern coast of the Chinese province and quickly weaken into a tropical low pressure.
Though Mekkhala does not hit Vietnam, it will cause rough seas and dump heavy rain on the country’s northern localities.
Coastal provinces will be soaked with 50-70mm of rain over the course of 12 hours. Heavy downpours will likely trigger landslides and flashfloods in mountainous provinces of Lai Chau, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Bac Can and Cao Bang.
The current new heat wave continues to strike northern and central provinces before rain lashes the region.
