The patient, a 20-year-old man, is studying at a university in HCM City, doctors said.
The student was hospitalized 10 days ago with symptoms like a fever, a sore throat, shortness of breath, and swollen glands. Test results from the HCM City Pasteur Institute showed he was infected with bacteria strain Corynebacterium diphtheria that causes the disease.
Sixteen people who had close contact with the patient were placed in quarantine and given preventive medicine.
Following a week-long treatment at the hospital’s infectious diseases unit, the patient now remains in stable health condition. He is expected to be discharged from hospital next week.
HCM City is the second locality in Vietnam that has reported the infection.
Last week, diphtheria broke out in Dak Nong province in the Central Highlands region, killing one local resident. A total of 12 people have tested positive, with one in critical condition.
The local health sector has taken measures to contain the disease and the diphtheria outbreak has now been brought under control.
