The event is held annually on the eighth day of the first month of the Lunar New Year. Early in the morning, trucks carrying approximately 10 tonnes of fish gather around Bat Trang commune in order to provide the fish for the ceremony. Monks read aloud at the ceremony, they have been invited by the organisers to host the event. Local people help to transfer the baskets of fish from the trucks to the riverside before releasing the fish. The ceremony usually lasts for 2 hours. During the ceremony, local Hanoians pray for health and good luck in the new year ahead.
