Hanoi wishes General Vo Nguyen Giap longevity

Hanoi’s high-ranking delegation, led by Secretary of the city’s municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi, paid a visit to General Vo Nguyen Giap on May 7 to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.

On behalf of the delegation, Mr Nghi wished General Vo Nguyen Giap good health and long life, and announced that the renovation of the Independence Martyrs’ Cemetery in Thanh Nua commune, Dien Bien district had been completed, showing deep gratitude to soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Dien Bien Phu campaign.

The Independence Martyrs’ Cemetery is the largest of its kind in Dien Bien district, covering 4.2 hectares with 2,432 graves. It receives thousands of local and foreign visitors every year.

A business in Hanoi provided over VND10 billion to upgrade the project within two months.

Before the inauguration ceremony, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Dien Bien provincial People’s Committee organised a requiem and invited the souls of the martyrs in A1, Tong Khao and Him Lam cemeteries to the Independence Martyrs’ Cemetery.
