Hand-foot-mouth disease kills 27 in five months

More than 46,300 people in 63 provinces and cities are reported to be infected with hand-foot-mouth disease, and 27 have died since the beginning of this year, says the Ministry of Health (MoH).

According to the MoH online conference on May 25, northern localities have the largest number of infected people (21,694 cases), while southern provinces and cities have the most fatalities (23).

MoH Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said the epidemic is getting more and more complicated worldwide, and in Vietnam in particular.

He asked participants in the conference to provide predictions on the development of the disease, thus working out effective measures and promoting communications to raise public awareness of the disease in an effort to reduce the number of human infections and fatalities.

Representative of the HCM City Department of Health said that despite his department’s efforts, the epidemic spread because people do not practise good hygiene, such as washing their hands and cleaning their houses often.
