Chinese national jailed for theft onboard Vietnam Airlines plane

Gui Xing Liang, 47, a Chinese national, was sentenced to two years in prison by the Hanoi People’s Court on April 25 for theft onboard a Vietnam Airlines flight last November.

The incident occurred on flight VN170 travelling from Da Nang city to Hanoi at noon on November 17 last year.

During the journey, two passengers noticed Gui moving and rummaging through an overhead black suitcase that appeared not to belong to him.

They informed the chief steward of his suspicious behavior who then looked for the owner of the suitcase. They could not find the owner Nguyen Van Thieng, from Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi until the aircraft landed at Noi Bai International Airport.
