Vietnam voices support for UN chief's efforts to maintain international peace

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the United Nations, chaired the first online meeting on May 21 between ambassadors of each of the 10 non-permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council (E10) and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The occasion saw all of the ambassadors and Guterres compare notes regarding the agenda of the UN Security Council (UNSC), including efforts to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Guterres added that the UN and its Peacekeeping Operations have moved to shift activities in a bid to provide assistance to countries in order to cope with the pandemic through a range of specific activities.

Indeed, plenty of nations and parties have responded to the call for an unconditional ceasefire of armed conflict globally, he said, adding that some conflicts will still continue to develop due to their complicated nature.

The UN Secretary General highlighted the E10’s significant role in pushing ahead with specific measures aimed at maintaining international peace and security, citing pragmatic and diverse initiatives proposed by various countries when they hold the UNSC monthly presidency.

Nations worldwide have gone on to hail efforts put in by the UN Secretariat and Guterres in their efforts to help countries respond to the effects of the pandemic.

Moreover, ambassadors underlined the practicality of the UN Chief’s proposals and initiatives as a way of co-ordinating international co-operation efforts, and raising public awareness of the impact of the pandemic. Furthermore, it is expected that the pooling of resources, especially in areas hardest hit by the epidemic, will serve to support millions of people who have been suffering from the effects of the humanitarian crisis.

For his part, Ambassador Quy affirmed that the country, together with the E10 and other UNSC members, will back the UN Secretary General’s efforts to maintain international peace and security, contain the spread of the pandemic,  and boost sustainable development.

Vietnam is taking on the role of co-ordinator of the E10 in May.
